National Library of Indonesia
The manuscript was discovered on the 18th November 1894 by Dr. J. Brandes in the palace compound of the Balinese King of Cakranegara, on the island of Lombok, on the east of Bali. By order of the Governor-General of the Netherlands East Indies, Dr Brandes, then Government linguist, was attached to the staff of the military force engaged in the Lombok war, with a view to preserve from destruction all objects of cultural interest to be found, especially manuscripts. Nagarakertagama or Desawarnana is written in palm leaf manuscript dated 1365 AD by Mpu Prapañca. At present, three manuscripts of the poem are known to exist, one of these, is now being held at the manuscript collection of the National Library. Presently a part of the collection of the National Library, numbered NB 9, it was formerly known as Codex Orientalis 5023 of the Legatum Warnerianum, Leiden University Library.
